What Actually Makes a Gift Box Worth Giving
We've put together a lot of gift boxes over the years. Some were for people we knew well, some were for complete strangers described to us in a three-line email. The ones that land well have a few things in common, and it's almost never the price point.
Start with one specific thing you know about the person
The best gift boxes are built around a single true thing: she always has a candle burning, he's just moved into his first flat, they've been talking about getting a proper throw for the sofa for two years. One specific detail is more useful than a general sense of their taste.
When customers email us for help, the most useful information is always the specific thing, not the general category. 'She likes nice things' doesn't help much. 'She drinks a lot of tea and her kitchen is all white and wood' gives us somewhere to start.
Think about the unboxing, not just the contents
A gift box is an experience as much as a collection of objects. The order things are packed in, the wrapping material, whether there's a handwritten note. These details matter more than most people expect. We wrap everything in kraft paper and add a dried botanical sprig because it takes two minutes and it changes how the whole thing feels to open.
If you're putting a box together yourself, think about what the person sees first. A candle on top of a folded tea towel on top of a mug is a different experience from the same three things thrown in with tissue paper.
Budget honestly
A £30 gift box that's well chosen and beautifully wrapped will land better than a £60 box that feels random. Budget is a constraint, not a measure of how much you care. The question is what you can do well within that constraint.
For most occasions, £40 to £70 is a comfortable range for a small gift box with two or three items. Under £30, you're usually looking at one good thing plus something small. Over £100, you have room to include something genuinely substantial.
If you're stuck, email us. Tell us who it's for, what you know about them, and your budget. We'll come back with a few options. It's one of the things we genuinely enjoy doing.
