Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Shop Small
Every autumn, small shops like ours go through a significant restock. New makers, new colourways, seasonal products that won't be back until next year. If you're someone who likes to shop thoughtfully rather than frantically, September and October are the months to do it.
The autumn restock is when independent shops are at their best
Most independent boutiques plan their autumn buying months in advance. The products that arrive in September and October represent the best of what makers have been working on through the summer. By December, the most interesting things are often gone.
This isn't a sales tactic. It's just the rhythm of small-batch production. A ceramicist who fires twice a year will have their autumn run available in September. A textile maker who dyes in small batches will have the new colourways in October. Waiting until December means working with what's left.
The difference between shopping small and shopping convenient
Shopping at an independent boutique takes slightly more effort than clicking through a large retailer. The website might be simpler. The stock might be limited. You might have to email a question rather than finding the answer in a dropdown.
What you get in return is usually a product that was chosen by a person who cares about it, made by someone who made it by hand, and sold by a shop that will answer your email personally. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends on what you're buying and who it's for.
Gift shopping in October versus December
October gift shopping is calmer, better stocked, and gives you time to think. December gift shopping is the opposite of all three. If you have a list of people to buy for and a sense of what they'd like, doing it in October means you can take your time, ask questions, and get things wrapped and ready without the pressure of a deadline.
We offer gift curation year-round, but October is when we have the most to work with. The shelves are full, the new stock is in, and we have time to think carefully about what we're putting together.
If you've been meaning to come in or browse the online shop, this is a good moment. The shelves are as full as they'll be all year.
